Cliff Notes in the World of SGLT2 inhibitors – Where are we now?
In veterinary medicine 2022 and 2023 brought the release of SGLT2 inhibitors for the treatment of feline diabetes mellitus. SGLT2 inhibitors increase glucose and sodium excretion into the urine reducing hyperglycemia independent of insulin secretion. Widespread use of these drugs in clinical cases has increased our knowledge and experience with SGLT2 inhibitors. This course will use clinical cases to discuss cliff notes version of everything to know about SGLT2 inhibitors in treatment of cats with diabetes including appropriate patient selection and screening, indications, monitoring and adverse effects will be discussed. Future applications of SGLT2i in other species and diseases will be touched on.
- Review mechanism of action and indications
- Identify appropriate patients for SGLT2i
