Laser Therapy: Physics and Laser Classification

Nov 07, 2024
NYC Pavilion Theater

This 1-hour seminar will be an explanation of the physics behind laser therapy and how that applies to the laser classification system and indications for laser therapy. It is an extensive overview of the electromagnetic spectrum and quantum and molecular physics as it applies to laser therapy, including dosage, frequencies, and electron volt potential. This seminar will include how lasers work in the body, differentiating photochemical effects on the electron transport chain of the mitochondria vs photothermal effects causing vasodilation. The purpose and parameters of the Laser Classification System will be explained. Practical information on safety as it relates to the laser classes with be covered, including OSHA regulation 1910.133(a) (1) and ANSI 136.3-2018-American Standard for Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care. Attendees will be shown the specific applications of the different classes of lasers, including indications and contraindications, and the different wavelengths of light within Class 2 lasers (Violet, Green, and Red). Finally, ample time for questions and answers will be provided to ensure a complete understanding.

First Hour: What is a laser? Wavelength, Electron Volt Potential, Electromagnetic Spectrum , Visible Light Spectrum vs Non-Visible Light Spectrum, Photochemical Lasers - The Electron Transport Chain in Mitochondria, Photothermal Lasers - Heat and Vasodilation.  The Laser Classification System, Power, Dosage, Safety - OSHA and ANSI, Class 2 (Violet, Green, and Red) - Indications and Contraindications, Class 3B/4 (High Power and/or Infrared) – Indications

  • This webinar will provide a comprehensive explanation of how lasers work based on quantum and molecular physics. After this teaching the practitioner should be able to apply this knowledge to decide what type of laser to have in their clinic and how to use each class of laser clinically. They will be able to explain the technology to their staff and clients. They will be educated on safety precautions dictated by OSHA and ANSI for the hospital staff and patients. Attendees should be able to choose the right type of laser therapy for an individual patient based on what the indications are for that laser and avoid contraindications.
