Small Animal , Feline Medicine , Emergency Medicine

Feline urethral obstruction (FUO) is a high-stakes, high-frequency emergency that demands a confident, coordinated approach. This lecture offers an updated, clinically grounded protocol for managing FUO, starting with triage and stabilization of the hyperkalemic or azotemic patient. Emphasis will be placed on how to recognize life-threatening electrolyte abnormalities, initiate therapy even before lab results return, and optimize anesthetic safety for unblocking. Attendees will also learn practical catheterization tips, post-obstruction management, and discharge strategies that minimize recurrence risk and client frustration. This session is ideal for emergency clinicians and general practitioners alike, with a blend of protocol-based guidance and real-world decision-making challenges.
