Just Keep Breathing! Introduction to Mechanical Ventilation during Anesthesia

This lecture provides an in-depth, yet easy to understand introduction to utilizing mechanical ventilation during anesthesia. It will cover basics of respiratory physiology, indications for ventilatory support, common reasons for hypoventilation in our anesthetized patients, a thorough review of the different functions of mechanical ventilators, and common troubleshooting scenarios. Attendees will learn how to safely and effectively use a mechanical ventilator in their practice to improve patient outcomes. 

  • 1.Attendees will be able to understand the basics of respiratory physiology and how it is involved with respiration and ventilation.
  • 2.Attendees will be able to recognize the indications for ventilatory support and anticipate common reasons for hypoventilation during anesthesia in their anesthetized patients.
  • 3.Attendees will learn how to safely and effectively operate a mechanical ventilator during anesthesia, including an understanding of the different functions and troubleshooting scenarios.
