Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Radiography Capture & Interpretation

October 29, 2026
Midtown Clinical Theater
Dentistry

Dental radiography is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, yet common errors in image capture and interpretation can limit its value in general practice. This lecture will highlight practical strategies to improve both technique and confidence when obtaining and evaluating dental radiographs. Attendees will review proper positioning, angulation, and exposure to consistently produce diagnostic images while minimizing retakes. The session will also focus on systematic interpretation, helping clinicians recognize normal anatomy, avoid common misinterpretations, and identify clinically relevant pathology. Frequent pitfalls—such as cone cut, elongation/foreshortening, and missed lesions—will be discussed with practical tips for correction. The goal is to provide general practitioners with immediately applicable skills to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve patient care.

  • Master positioning and angulation to consistently capture diagnostic images
  • Identify and correct common technical errors (cone cut, elongation, foreshortening)
  • Use a systematic approach to radiograph interpretation
  • Recognize common pathology and avoid frequent misinterpretations
