DiabEasy: Finally Finding the Right Insulin Dose the Easy Way

October 30, 2026
Midtown Clinical Theater
Internal Medicine

For many clinicians, as well as owners, diabetes mellitus is a difficult disease to deal with.
You think diabetes mellitus, you think sugar: we need to normalise the sugar, right?
We proceed to try and normalise blood sugars like a bull on a red target.
Most of us have been taught various different ways of getting the glucose under control. Various different ways contradict each other. Veterinary endocrinologists spend year after year debating the best practices and write text books full of protocol. And if we are honest: do we truly have good control over what the blood sugar does by just injecting insulin twice daily?

Two important questions arise:
1. If we as clinicians cannot agree on the best protocol, how can we convince owners to participate in one?
2. If one protocol is not clearly superior to the other, can our focus not simply shift to creating a simplified treatment strategy that at least has the benefit of being easy to explain to ourselves and clients?
This lecture introduces a no-nonsense, evidence-based method in finding the correct insulin dose for dogs and cats, called DiabEasy. Hate diabetes? Let this lecture change your mind!

  • -realize that there is only limited evidence that guides the best diabetes protocols
  • -realize that complicating the treatment protocol leads to patient loss
  • -develop a fool-proof, easy to learn and teach method to find teh right insulin dose in dogs and cats.
