Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall, What’s the Problem After All?

October 30, 2026
Business Theater I

When veterinary teams struggle, the default diagnosis is often the same: a people problem. Not enough people. The wrong people. Burnout. Engagement. Accountability. But what if that's only part of the story?
In this panel, we'll take a deeper look in the mirror and examine how the systems we've built, tolerated, or inherited, shape the way our teams function, communicate, and lead. From scheduling and workflow design to role clarity and leadership development, many of the challenges we attribute to individuals are actually rooted in the structures that surround them.
This isn't a binary conversation of systems vs. people. The reality is more complex and more hopeful. Sustainable change happens when we intentionally align both: building systems that support humans, and developing humans who can lead, adapt, and improve those systems over time.
Through real-world examples, honest reflection, and practical strategies, we'll explore how veterinary technicians, so often closest to the workflow, are uniquely positioned to identify breakdowns, redesign processes, and help cultivate leaders at every level of the practice. Attendees will leave with a sharper lens for diagnosing team challenges, evaluating workflows, and leading change in ways that strengthen both systems and people.

  • Differentiate between people problems and system design flaws
  • Evaluate workflows and time management through a systems lens
  • Apply integrated strategies that address both systems and people
  • Strengthen leadership development within the veterinary team
  • Leverage technician insights to identify breakdowns and drive meaningful change
