Tape It or Leave It: Should We Worry About Tapeworms in Companion Animals?

  • List the common tapeworms of dogs and cats, and briefly outline the life cycle of each, noting appropriate intermediate and final hosts
  • For each tapeworm discussed, describe the potential pathogenic effects on the canine, feline, or human host (when applicable)
  • Choose appropriate diagnostic tests for each tapeworm species discussed, and be able to interpret the results of each test, as well as the limitations of each
  • Discuss the importance of treatment in each case, noting when treatment failure may occur, and differences in treatment protocols depending on the clinical presentation of each parasite
