October 29, 2026
IDEXX Advanced Diagnostics Theater
This presentation will provide a brief review of terminology of ear canal changes associated with otitis including stenosis, epithelial vs nodular hyperplasia and discharge (ceruminous vs purulent). Then, case examples showing progressive worsening of otitis externa will be used to guide discussion on selection of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory therapy. Anatomic variation and treatment strategies for brachycephalic breeds will be highlighted.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define key terminology related to ear canal changes in otitis, including stenosis, hyperplasia types, and discharge characteristics.
- Differentiate between epithelial and nodular hyperplasia, and between ceruminous and purulent discharge in clinical cases.
- Analyze case examples of progressive otitis externa to inform therapeutic decision-making.
- Select appropriate topical antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory therapies based on disease progression and presentation.
- Recognize anatomic variations in brachycephalic breeds and adapt treatment strategies to optimize outcomes in these patients.
