Recognition and Management of Arrhythmias in General Practice

October 29, 2026
VMANYC Clinical Theater
Cardiology

This session will provide general practice veterinarians with a practical approach to recognizing and managing common cardiac arrhythmias encountered in first-opinion practice. Using case-based examples and ECG interpretation tips, the lecture will focus on differentiating normal from abnormal rhythms, identifying arrhythmias that require urgent intervention, and understanding which cases can be monitored or managed conservatively. Attendees will gain confidence in approaching irregular heart rhythms during routine consultations, anesthetic monitoring, and emergency presentations. The session will also discuss when to pursue further diagnostics, initiate treatment, or refer to a cardiology specialist. By the end of the lecture, participants will have a structured, clinically applicable framework for assessing arrhythmias and making informed management decisions in everyday practice.

  • Recognize common arrhythmias encountered in general veterinary practice using physical examination findings and basic ECG interpretation.
  • Differentiate between benign rhythm disturbances and arrhythmias requiring urgent treatment or referral.
  • Develop a practical approach to the initial management and stabilization of patients presenting with arrhythmias.
  • Understand when additional diagnostics, ambulatory monitoring, or specialist cardiology referral are indicated.
