Sedation and Analgesia in Emergency and ICU

October 29, 2026
Midtown Clinical Theater
ECC

Pain and anxiety are common in emergency and critical care patients, yet their management can be complicated by underlying instability and the urgency of treatment. This session is designed for emergency veterinarians and technicians who play a key role in ensuring patients remain both safe and comfortable during hospitalization. Attendees will learn how to support appropriate drug selection in emergency and ICU scenarios such as trauma, respiratory distress, endocrine emergencies, and aggressive patients.

The lecture will review the pharmacology and clinical application of commonly used sedatives and analgesics, including opioids, benzodiazepines, dissociative anesthetic, and alpha-2 agonists. Emphasis will be placed on combination protocols, routes of administration, and patient monitoring before, during, and after drug administration. Practical tips for anticipating complications, identifying adverse effects, and communicating concerns promptly to theveterinarian will also be included.

By the end of this session, attendees will feel more confident in their ability to apply appropriate sedation and analgesia protocols, and advocate for safe and effective pain management in emergency and ICU patients.

  • Evaluate the pharmacology, indications, and contraindications of sedatives and analgesics commonly used in emergency and ICU patients.
  • Select and apply safe drug combinations and routes of administration for patients with trauma, respiratory compromise, or endocrine emergencies.
  • Anticipate and recognize complications of sedation and analgesia, and communicate effectively with the care team to ensure patient safety.
