Blocked and Loaded: Tackling the Urethral Obstruction

Urethral obstruction is a common small animal emergency that requires prompt recognition and effective management. This case-based session reviews the pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of urethral obstruction in dogs and cats. Attendees will work through two clinical cases: Uncomplicated Unblocking, which focuses on stabilization, diagnostics, catheterization, and initial management of a straightforward obstruction, and Challenging Complicated Unblocking, which explores recurrent obstruction, electrolyte abnormalities, difficult catheterizations, and advanced treatment options, including surgical intervention. Practical tips, clinical decision-making, and strategies to reduce recurrence will be emphasized throughout. Participants will leave with a structured approach to managing both routine and complicated urethral obstruction cases in everyday practice.
