Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgical Principles (Lecture and Laboratory)

This course is targeted for today’s general small animal veterinarians that is interested in reviewing both general surgical principles and techniques in a lecture and wet lab format.

Cadaver and simulation tissue (Pre-requisites) We will expect you to have the introductory capability to do the following:
1. Understand basic Halstedian surgical principles
2. Perform basic surgical suturing tasks:
3. Understand basic principles of abdominal procedures (Gastrotomy, Cystotomy)
4. Understand basic principle of wound closure

  • The course is designed to inform and expose you to:
  • 1. Hallstead’s Surgical Principles
  • 2. Use of checklists in surgery
  • 3. Suture and relevant materials
  • 4. Suturing & tissue handling
  • 5. Proper use of surgical instruments
  • 6. Patient prep and aseptic surgical technique
  • 7. Cadaver: Wound Closure, Cystotomy, Gastrotomy, Enterotomy
  • 8. Energy in Surgery
