Dr. Andrea Winkel graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 and completed her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 2010. She served as an active-duty captain in the US Army Veterinary Corps as a veterinarian from 2009 to 2014. After leaving the Army, Dr. Winkel spent a year in private practice before continuing her education with a 3-year residency in avian medicine and surgery at Texas A&M University, where she cared for a wide variety of exotic pet species, from big cats to hummingbirds. She spent a year at an avian and exotic specialty service in Columbus, Ohio, before moving to Robbinsville, New Jersey, where she worked as an avian and exotic veterinarian for several years. After that, she moved to New York City’s Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in their Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine Service. Now, she has transitioned to a teaching position at a new veterinary school and teaching hospital in New Jersey. She holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor, Zoo and Exotics, at Rowan University Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Winkel currently serves on the board of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) as the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Welfare Primary Committee representative and AAV’s Aviculture Chair. Additionally, she is an active member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV), the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV), the American Association of Fish Veterinarians (AAFV), and the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA).
